Background of the study
In recent years, Twitter has evolved from a mere microblogging platform into a dynamic forum for linguistic creativity and socio-political expression in Nigeria. The use of hashtags has redefined digital discourse by enabling users to consolidate ideas, promote cultural trends, and initiate social movements (Adeyemi, 2023). Hashtag-based linguistic innovation reflects not only the evolution of language but also the interplay between technology and cultural identity, where digital communication reshapes traditional linguistic boundaries (Bello, 2023). The study investigates how hashtag trends drive semantic and pragmatic shifts in Nigerian digital conversations, capturing the collective voice of netizens. The phenomenon has significant implications for sociolinguistics, digital anthropology, and communication studies. Researchers have observed that hashtags can encapsulate complex socio-political ideas within a few characters, thereby challenging conventional narratives and fostering a new mode of linguistic creativity (Okoro, 2024). Moreover, the interplay between local dialects and global linguistic influences through hashtags highlights the dual forces of globalization and cultural specificity in shaping online discourse (Ibrahim, 2023). This research also seeks to understand the role of user-generated content in promoting language change and cultural dialogue on social media platforms, providing insights into how digital practices contribute to linguistic innovation and identity formation (Chinwe, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the rapid adoption of Twitter in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research that systematically investigates the linguistic innovations generated through hashtag usage. The sparse academic literature leaves a gap in understanding how hashtags contribute to reshaping digital discourse and language use among Nigerian netizens. Additionally, the evolving nature of digital communication raises questions about the sustainability and impact of such innovations on traditional language structures (Ogunleye, 2023). This study seeks to explore these dimensions in detail, addressing the theoretical and practical implications of hashtag-driven language change. The ambiguity in existing frameworks calls for a critical analysis of digital linguistic trends and the socio-cultural contexts that drive them, which is essential for informing both academic debate and practical communication strategies (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To examine the role of Twitter hashtags in shaping Nigerian digital discourse.
  2. To analyze the patterns of linguistic innovation emerging from hashtag usage.
  3. To assess the socio-cultural impact of these digital language practices on Nigerian society.

Research questions

  1. How do Twitter hashtags influence the structure and evolution of Nigerian digital language?
  2. What are the predominant linguistic innovations observed in hashtag usage?
  3. In what ways do these innovations reflect broader socio-cultural trends in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the transformative role of social media in modern linguistic practices, highlighting how digital platforms foster innovative language usage and cultural expression. The findings will contribute to academic discourse on sociolinguistics and digital communication, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and media practitioners. By examining the impact of hashtags on digital discourse, the research underscores the importance of technology in shaping cultural identities and provides a foundation for further studies on language evolution in digital environments (Umeh, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses solely on Twitter and its hashtag practices within Nigerian digital discourse. It is limited to analyzing linguistic innovation and does not extend to other forms of digital communication or platforms. The research confines itself to the thematic content generated through hashtags, thereby excluding broader social media interactions and offline language practices.
